SaveMyChats turns a WhatsApp chat export into something worth keeping — a beautiful web page or a print-ready PDF — entirely inside your browser.
WhatsApp lets you export a chat, but what you get back is an awkward .txt file and a pile of loose photos and voice notes. It is technically your conversation, but it is nobody's idea of a keepsake. We built SaveMyChats to fix that: drop in the export, and get back a clean, readable copy that looks like the conversation you actually had.
Why it exists
The idea came from a genuinely annoying afternoon. A family member had changed phones and wanted to keep a long thread with someone who had died — the sort of conversation you cannot re-create. WhatsApp exported it happily enough, and produced a folder that was completely unreadable: a wall of timestamped lines in a text file, and several hundred photos and .opus files named things like AUD-20230114-WA0007.opus, in no useful order and attached to nothing.
Every online tool that promised to fix this wanted the file uploaded to a server. That is an unreasonable thing to ask for a conversation like that one. Modern browsers can unzip a file, parse it and render it perfectly well on their own — so SaveMyChats does exactly that, and nothing else.
Privacy is the whole point
The conversations people want to save are often the most personal ones — messages from a partner, a parent, a friend who is no longer here. So SaveMyChats was built on a simple rule: your chat never leaves your device. All the work happens in your browser. Nothing is uploaded to us, stored on a server, or seen by anyone but you. Close the tab and it is gone.
This is not a promise you have to take on trust. Open your browser's developer tools, watch the Network tab, and drop a chat in — you will not see your file leave. Or pull the plug on your internet connection once the page has loaded: the tool carries on working, because everything it needs is already on your machine.
Who it's for
Anyone who wants to hold on to a conversation: people switching phones, families preserving the words of someone they have lost, couples keeping a record of the early days, and people who simply want a tidy, printable copy of an important exchange. It is also used for more practical reasons — keeping a readable record of an agreement with a landlord, a contractor or a seller, where a screenshot would not be much use.
What it will not do
It is worth being clear about the limits. SaveMyChats reads the export file WhatsApp gives you; it cannot reach into WhatsApp itself, recover deleted messages, or retrieve anything WhatsApp left out of the export. If your export is missing older messages, that trimming happened on your phone before the file existed, and no tool working from that file can undo it. It also does not touch iCloud or Google Drive backups, which are encrypted in a format only WhatsApp can read.
How we keep it free
SaveMyChats is free, supported by unobtrusive ads. If you would rather not see them, there is a small one-off payment to remove them. Either way, the tool works fully and privately — the way you pay does not change what happens to your data, which is: nothing. There is no account, no subscription and no email address to hand over.
