What SaveMyChats actually does
WhatsApp will give you your conversation back, but not in a form anyone would want to read. An export is a raw _chat.txt file full of timestamps, plus a heap of loose photos, videos and .opus voice notes with names like IMG-20240817-WA0031.jpg. SaveMyChats reassembles it into the conversation you remember having.
Reads the whole export
Drop in the .zip and it is unpacked in the page — text file, images, videos and voice notes together. Messages are matched back to their attachments, so a photo appears where it was sent rather than in a folder on its own.
Rebuilds the conversation
Messages are laid out as bubbles with the day dividers, timestamps and sender names in the right places. Pick which participant is you and your messages move to the right, exactly as they sat in the app.

- Scroll down and tap Export Chat.
- Choose Attach Media (or Without Media), then Save to Files.

Pick media if you are unsure. “Without media” replaces every photo and voice note with the text <Media omitted>, and you cannot get them back without exporting again. Why your chat never leaves your browser
Most “convert your chat” tools ask you to upload the file to a server. That means handing your private conversation — every message, photo and voice note in it — to a company you have no reason to trust, and hoping it is deleted afterwards.
SaveMyChats does not work that way. The .zip is unpacked, parsed and rendered by JavaScript running inside your own browser tab. There is no upload step, because there is nowhere to upload it to. We do not run a server that receives chats, we have no database of conversations, and there is nothing for us to hand over, leak or lose.
You can check this yourself: open your browser’s developer tools, switch to the Network tab, and drop in a chat. You will see no request carrying your file. Or simply disconnect from the internet after the page loads — the tool still works, because everything it needs is already on your machine.
When you close the tab, the chat is gone from memory. The only copy that persists is the file you chose to save.
Questions, answered
Is my data safe?
Yes. Your chat is read and converted entirely in your browser — it never touches a server, ours or anyone else’s. Close the tab and it is gone.
Do photos and voice notes come through?
Yes, as long as you chose to include media when exporting. The web-page export keeps images inline and voice notes playable. The PDF shows photos and marks each voice note with a labelled chip.
Web page or PDF — which should I pick?
The web page is a single self-contained file that looks like the chat and keeps media playable — lovely for keeping. The PDF is best for printing or sharing a clean transcript.
Does it work with group chats?
Yes. Everyone’s messages are shown, and you can pick which person is “you” so your messages sit on the right, just like in the app.
Why is my export missing older messages?
WhatsApp caps how large a single export can be. On long or media-heavy chats it quietly trims the oldest messages, or includes fewer attachments than you asked for. That happens before the file ever reaches us, so nothing on our side can recover them.
Can I export just part of a conversation?
Yes. Once the chat is loaded you can set a date range, so a five-year group chat becomes just the fortnight you actually wanted.
Can I hide phone numbers or names?
Yes. There are redaction controls for phone numbers and participant names, which is worth using if the copy is going to anyone else.
Is there a file size limit?
There is no limit we impose, but because the work happens on your own device, very large exports (several gigabytes of video, say) are limited by your machine’s memory. On a phone, a huge media-heavy export may be slow; the same file on a laptop is usually fine.
Does it work on a phone?
Yes. It runs in a mobile browser, so you can export from WhatsApp and convert on the same device. For very large exports or for printing, a computer is easier.
Do I need an account?
No. There is no sign-up, no email address to hand over, and no account to delete later.
What does it cost?
The tool is free and ad-supported. If you would rather not see ads, a one-off payment removes them. Either way you get every feature — paying changes the ads, not the tool.
Is SaveMyChats made by WhatsApp?
No. It is an independent tool, not affiliated with or endorsed by WhatsApp or Meta. It simply reads the export file WhatsApp already gives you.
